A 21-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh allegedly impersonated a senior Indian Army officer and managed to maintain the charade for several weeks before being caught in a carefully planned operation by military authorities.
The accused, identified as Aryan Verma, reportedly moved around Shahjahanpur and nearby areas dressed as an Army Brigadier, using a luxury SUV fitted with military-style markings and accompanied by two private security guards whom he introduced as elite commandos.
Police have registered a case in connection with the incident, and investigations are underway to determine the full extent of the alleged impersonation.
Fake Military Identity and Accessories Recovered
Authorities uncovered several items allegedly used to support the fake identity. During the search, officials recovered a forged military identity card, Army-related insignia, a ceremonial officer’s cap, and a replica air pistol.
Investigators also seized a stethoscope, visiting cards, ATM cards, mobile phones, and documents that appeared to support the suspect’s claim of being associated with military medical services.
Among the recovered materials was an identity card allegedly carrying forged credentials linked to a military medical institution.
Dream of Joining Armed Forces Led to Deception
According to preliminary findings, the accused aspired to become a doctor in the Armed Forces Medical Services. Investigators said he had attempted to qualify through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) but was unsuccessful.
Unable to achieve his goal, he allegedly informed family members that he had secured admission and later began presenting himself as a senior military officer.
Officials believe he invested considerable effort into maintaining the false image, including arranging a specially tailored uniform and modifying his vehicle to resemble that of a serving Army officer.
Suspicious Activity Triggered Investigation
Military authorities reportedly became aware of the suspect after receiving information about a young individual claiming to be a high-ranking Army officer in and around the Shahjahanpur Cantonment area.
As concerns grew, officials began discreetly verifying his identity. After gathering sufficient information, Army authorities and local ex-servicemen coordinated efforts to confirm whether the individual was genuinely associated with the armed forces.
Planned Event Used to Expose Impersonator
To verify their suspicions, officials allegedly devised a strategy that involved inviting the suspect to attend a public programme as a special guest.
Believing the invitation to be genuine, the accused reportedly arrived at the event wearing a Brigadier’s ceremonial uniform and accompanied by his security entourage.
Shortly after his arrival, security personnel detained him and began questioning him regarding his identity and credentials.
Authorities also recovered documents from individuals accompanying him, which are now being examined as part of the investigation.
Probe Continues
Police and military officials are continuing their inquiry to determine whether the accused used the fake identity for financial gain, influence, or other purposes.
The incident has drawn attention due to the elaborate nature of the impersonation and the extensive measures allegedly taken to project the image of a senior military officer.
Officials have urged citizens to remain cautious and report suspicious activity involving the misuse of military uniforms, insignia, or government credentials.
Conclusion
What began as an alleged attempt to live out an unrealised dream has now become the subject of a serious investigation. Authorities are working to establish how long the impersonation continued and whether any additional individuals were involved in helping maintain the false identity.
