India could make several changes to their T20I squad for the upcoming series against Afghanistan, with some familiar names reportedly in contention for a return.
According to a report, Krunal Pandya is being discussed by the BCCI as India assess their options in the spin-bowling all-rounder department. Krunal has not played international cricket for India since July 2021.
The development comes after Axar Patel’s relatively modest returns during India’s recent England-Ireland tour.
Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy near return
India are also expected to receive a boost with Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy making progress with their fitness.
Both players have reportedly been spending significant time training at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Their improved fitness could make them available for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan later this month.
Washington Sundar is another player being monitored closely. The all-rounder is expected to return to the Centre of Excellence this week as part of his fitness assessment.
A source quoted in the report said the Afghanistan T20Is could provide Sundar with an opportunity to return to international cricket in the shortest format.
Krunal Pandya’s possible India comeback
Krunal Pandya’s name has reportedly re-entered the selection discussion after his long absence from the Indian team.
The left-arm spinner and batting all-rounder last represented India in July 2021. He has not featured for the national side since then, but his experience in the format could make him an option for the upcoming series.
His possible return is also being considered in the context of Axar Patel’s recent performances. Axar managed only four wickets in seven matches during the England-Ireland tour, according to the report.
However, no final decision regarding Krunal’s selection has been confirmed.
What about Jasprit Bumrah?
Jasprit Bumrah’s availability remains another major question ahead of the Afghanistan series.
The Indian pace spearhead recently missed the Sri Lanka Test series and has continued his rehabilitation and training at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.
The management is reportedly being cautious with Bumrah as India look ahead to a busy international schedule and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
While a return against Afghanistan has not been ruled out, the report suggests that the Asian Games could be a more realistic target for his comeback, provided his recovery continues without complications.

The three-match Afghanistan T20I series is expected to be the beginning of another busy stretch for the Indian team before the IPL.
With several players returning from fitness issues and others competing for places, the series could give the selectors an opportunity to test different combinations.
