During the Ayyappa pilgrimage season, devotional songs and preparations for the Sabarimala journey were a regular part of life in his village. Those experiences stayed with the filmmaker and eventually inspired him to build a story around the 41-day Vratham.

The central character, Trinath, is an alcoholic who must give up drinking during his Deeksha. His relationship with his daughter Mannama forms another emotional layer of the narrative.
