Apple has unveiled a redesigned iPad mini featuring an 8.5-inch OLED display, a faster A20 Pro processor and a slimmer body. The new tablet brings significant changes to the display, performance and AI capabilities, making it one of the biggest upgrades to the iPad mini lineup.

The new iPad mini starts at $699 for the Wi-Fi variant, while the Wi-Fi + Cellular model is priced at $849. Apple will open pre-orders on October 28, 2026, with sales beginning November 6.

The announcement comes just days before Apple’s upcoming “Pro and Tell” event, scheduled for October 28.

New iPad mini Gets an 8.5-Inch OLED Display

One of the biggest upgrades in the new iPad mini is its 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR display, which uses OLED technology. The new panel offers pixel-level lighting control, enabling deeper blacks, improved contrast and more vibrant colours.

Apple says the display can reach peak brightness levels of up to 1,200 nits. It also supports full-screen brightness of up to 600 nits for SDR and HDR content, along with a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio.

These improvements could make the tablet more suitable for watching videos, reading, gaming and editing photos.

Apple has also introduced an optional nano-texture display finish designed to reduce reflections and glare in brightly lit environments. The feature could be useful for people who regularly use their tablets outdoors or near windows.

Thinner and Lighter Design

Apple has redesigned the iPad mini with a slimmer profile measuring just 5.4mm in thickness. The tablet will be available in two colour options.

The thinner design is intended to make the device easier to carry while maintaining its compact form factor. Despite its smaller size compared with larger iPad models, the new iPad mini aims to deliver a more advanced viewing and computing experience.

A20 Pro Chip Brings Faster Performance

The new iPad mini is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip, which includes a six-core CPU and a seven-core GPU with Neural Accelerators integrated into each GPU core.

According to Apple, the processor delivers up to 60% faster multithreaded performance for everyday activities such as photo editing and multitasking.

The company also claims the tablet offers up to 4.5 times faster AI performance than the previous generation. This improvement is expected to benefit AI-powered features, creative applications and other demanding tasks.

Actual performance will depend on the applications being used and their compatibility with the new hardware.

Apple Intelligence and Siri Get an Upgrade

The new iPad mini launches with the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features. Apple says the software can use personal context to help users find information, answer questions and understand what’s displayed on their screens.

Combined with the upgraded processor, these capabilities could make the tablet more useful for productivity, information searches and everyday tasks.

The Neural Accelerators built into the GPU are designed to support AI workloads, helping the device handle supported machine-learning features more efficiently.

New Camera, Connectivity and Audio Features

Apple has added a 12MP front-facing camera with Center Stage support to the new iPad mini. The feature helps keep users in view during compatible video calls, making the tablet more convenient for online meetings and conversations.

The device also offers faster wireless and cellular connectivity, along with fast-charging support.

Another notable addition is Apple’s Acoustic Display technology. According to the company, specially designed woofers integrated into the display help produce deeper bass and higher volume, improving the audio experience when watching videos, gaming or editing content.

Together, these additions aim to make the iPad mini more versatile for entertainment and productivity.

New iPad mini Price and Availability

Apple has announced the following starting prices for the new iPad mini:

  • iPad mini Wi-Fi: $699
  • iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular: $849
  • Pre-orders begin: October 28, 2026
  • Availability begins: November 6, 2026

These are US starting prices. Apple has not provided Indian pricing in the announcement details covered here.

What the New iPad mini Means for Buyers

The latest iPad mini brings several notable changes, particularly its OLED display, slimmer design and faster A20 Pro chip. The addition of upgraded AI capabilities, improved front-camera features and enhanced audio also broadens its appeal.

However, the higher starting price may be an important consideration for buyers deciding between the compact iPad and other tablets in Apple’s lineup.

For users who prefer a portable tablet for reading, entertainment, video calls and creative work, the new iPad mini could be an attractive option. Its overall value will depend on how much the improved display, performance and AI features matter to individual users.
