Indian boxer Parveen Hooda added another gold medal to India’s Asian Games 2026 campaign after winning the women’s 65kg boxing title in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on October 2.
Hooda overcame Chen Nien-Chen of Chinese Taipei in a tightly fought final. The Indian was awarded the bout by a 3-2 split decision, completing her run to the Asian Games podium.
Hooda Completes Winning Run
The Indian boxer had already made a strong impression in the knockout stages.
In the semifinal on September 29, Hooda faced China’s Li Shu and produced a dominant performance. She earned a 5-0 victory, with all five judges giving the bout in her favour.
The final was a much closer contest. However, Hooda held her nerve through the decisive rounds and secured the judges’ verdict to take home the gold.
What Happened in the Final?
Unlike a unanimous decision, a split decision means the judges are divided over the winner.
The 3-2 scoreline in Hooda’s favour showed how competitive the final was. Three judges selected Hooda as the winner, while two gave the contest to Chen Nien-Chen.
The narrow victory nevertheless gave India another gold medal in boxing.
Third Indian Woman to Win Asian Games Boxing Gold
Hooda’s achievement places her among a select group of Indian women boxers who have won Asian Games gold.
She is now the third Indian woman boxer to achieve the feat, following MC Mary Kom and Lovlina Borgohain.
The result adds another chapter to India’s growing record in women’s boxing at major international competitions.
Background: Hooda’s Earlier Suspension
Before returning to the international stage, Hooda faced a 22-month suspension announced by the International Testing Agency (ITA) in May 2024.
The sanction followed three whereabouts failures recorded between April 2022 and March 2023. As a consequence, she lost her Asian Games 2023 bronze medal and a Paris 2024 Olympic quota.
Her latest Asian Games success represents a return to the top level of competition.
