The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan has once again demonstrated his immense popularity among Indian moviegoers. His latest film, The Odyssey, made a remarkable debut at the Indian box office by collecting an estimated ₹19.50 crore gross (around USD 2.05 million) on its opening day. The film’s net collection is estimated at approximately ₹16 crore.

With this performance, The Odyssey has become the highest-opening non-franchise Hollywood film in India, surpassing the opening-day record previously held by Oppenheimer, which earned around ₹17.77 crore gross on its first day.

IMAX Delivers Record-Breaking Numbers

A major contributor to the film’s strong opening was its exceptional performance in premium formats. The Odyssey reportedly earned more than ₹5 crore from IMAX screenings alone, making it the biggest single-day IMAX opening for any film in India.

Christopher Nolan has long been associated with the IMAX format, and his films continue to attract audiences looking for the best theatrical experience. Premium formats such as IMAX, PXL, EPIQ, 4DX, and PCX contributed over 40% of the film’s total first-day earnings, highlighting the growing demand for immersive cinema experiences.

Higher Ticket Prices Boost Collections

Although The Odyssey collected around 10% more than Oppenheimer on its opening day, industry estimates suggest that overall footfall was slightly lower. The difference is largely attributed to higher average ticket prices, especially across premium-format screens.

Despite fewer admissions, stronger pricing helped the film achieve a new benchmark at the Indian box office.

Positive Reviews Could Drive Strong Weekend Growth

The Odyssey has received an encouraging response from both critics and audiences, generating positive word of mouth after its release. The film is also expected to enjoy an extended run in IMAX theatres with limited competition, which could support steady collections in the coming weeks.

Trade analysts believe the film has a realistic chance of surpassing Oppenheimer’s lifetime India box office performance, which finished at around ₹159 crore gross. Its long-term performance, however, will depend on audience momentum over the coming weekends.

Early Signs Point Toward a Successful Run

With a record-breaking opening, strong premium-format occupancy, and Christopher Nolan’s loyal fan base, The Odyssey has started its theatrical journey on a highly promising note. As weekend collections begin to unfold, the film is expected to remain one of the biggest Hollywood releases in India this year.
