The Supreme Court of India, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, is hearing the Kolkata rape-murder case involving the death of a junior doctor. The court is urging doctors across the country, who have been on strike for several days, to return to work. The ongoing strike has caused significant inconvenience to millions of people. In a previous hearing, the court had already asked the doctors to resume work, but the strike continues as doctors demand justice for the deceased junior doctor and a Central Protection Act for healthcare workers.
Supreme Court’s Warning to Doctors
During the hearing, the Supreme Court warned that if the doctors do not return to work, they will be considered absent, and the law will take its course. The court also assured that the National Task Force will listen to the concerns of all stakeholders involved.
CJI’s Remarks
Chief Justice Chandrachud emphasized the importance of doctors returning to their duties, stating that the heads of hospitals are also doctors and are aware of the issues being faced. However, if doctors do not return to work, the public healthcare system could collapse.
The Supreme Court also mentioned that if too many stakeholders are included in the committee, it could hinder its functioning. The committee, which includes senior female doctors dedicated to public health, will ensure that all voices, including those of trainee doctors, resident doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff, are heard.
CJI’s Personal Experience
During the hearing, CJI Chandrachud shared a personal experience, recalling a time when he had to sleep on the floor of a government hospital while a relative was admitted there. This story highlighted his understanding of the challenges within the public healthcare system.
