The interim government was established to control the increasing violence in Bangladesh. Muhammad Yunus, the head of this interim government, took the oath as Prime Minister in a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace ‘Bangabhaban’ on August 8. The Indian High Commissioner attended this event.
Last month, students in Bangladesh began protesting against the reservation in civil services, which escalated into violence. The situation worsened when Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position as Prime Minister and fled to India. To manage the situation, the interim government was formed.
Indian High Commissioner Attended the Ceremony
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Yunus on forming the government in Bangladesh through social media. Along with the Prime Minister, 16 other colleagues also took the oath. Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma attended the swearing-in ceremony of the interim government in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, as confirmed by officials from the Ministry of External Affairs. Yunus took the oath as the head of the interim government three days after Hasina’s resignation.
Formation of a 16-Member Advisory Council
President Mohammad Shahabuddin administered the oath to Muhammad Yunus. A 16-member advisory council was announced to assist Yunus, including two student movement leaders, Mohammad Nahid Islam and Asif Mehmood, and four women. For the first time, two young people, aged 26, were included in the cabinet.
The advisory council to assist Yunus includes Nahid Islam, Asif Mehmood, Rizwana Hasan, Farida Akhter, Adil-ur-Rahman Khan, AFM Khalid Hossain, Noorjahan Begum, Sharmin Murshid, Farooq-e-Azam, Salehuddin Ahmed, Nazrul, Hasan Arif, M. Sakhawat, Supradeep Chakma, Bidhan Ranjan Roy, and Tahid Hussain, along with Professor Asif.
