Diabetes is a serious health issue today. According to health experts, diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity can increase inflammation levels in the body. Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury, illness, burns, or oxidative stress. It can lead to reduced awareness or decreased brain function. During inflammation, the body’s cells fight each other and create an environment where infections can thrive. This process releases chemicals that cause reactions in surrounding cells, leading to inflammation, which often results in pain or swelling.

Dr. Vinesh Taneja, a consultant in the Medicine Department at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, explained to IANS, “When the body’s immune system becomes overactive or there is a long-term infection, it can cause inflammation in brain cells. This weakens the nervous system and reduces alertness.” He added that the elderly are at higher risk, and people with conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity are also more likely to experience reduced awareness.

Dr. Taneja mentioned that chronic stress can also cause inflammation and recommended practices like meditation and relaxation to help prevent it.

Lifestyle and Diet Contribute to Inflammation

Dr. Vipul Gupta, Group Director of Neurointervention at Paras Hospital in Gurugram, stated, “Lifestyle factors can also contribute to inflammation. Lack of physical activity, stress, obesity, unhealthy diets like oily and junk foods, sleep disturbances, air pollution, smoking, and alcohol consumption negatively affect the body.” He noted that inflammation can occur when someone repeatedly experiences fever or infections. However, in some cases, inflammation can persist for a long time. Studies have shown that people with arthritis, especially those who are obese, have a higher risk of reduced awareness or decreased brain function. To prevent this, he advised including daily physical activity and exercise in your routine, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and eating fruits and vegetables.
