India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando have both been sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following a tense exchange during the second Test in Colombo.
The two players were involved in an on-field confrontation on the opening day after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal. Following the incident, both cricketers were found to have violated the ICC Code of Conduct.
Jaiswal and Fernando Receive Same Punishment
The ICC has imposed a 25 per cent fine of their respective match fees on both Jaiswal and Fernando.
They have also each received one demerit point on their disciplinary records.
The players were charged under Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The provision deals with inappropriate physical contact involving players, officials, support personnel and other individuals during an international match.
Neither player had any previous offences recorded in the preceding 24 months.
How Did the Incident Happen?
The confrontation occurred during the 17th over of India’s innings.
Fernando had just dismissed Jaiswal when the Indian batter walked towards the Sri Lankan bowler. The two exchanged words before the situation escalated.
Fernando moved his head towards Jaiswal, who responded by leaning forward. Their heads subsequently made contact.
The incident attracted the attention of the match officials and was later dealt with through the ICC’s disciplinary process.
No Formal Hearing Required
Jaiswal and Fernando both admitted to the offences and agreed to the proposed sanctions.
The penalties were recommended by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. Since both players accepted the charges and punishment, the matter did not require a formal hearing.
The one demerit point awarded to each player will remain part of their disciplinary record.
Strong Contest Continues in Colombo
The incident occurred amid an intense second Test between India and Sri Lanka in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship.
India produced a substantial first-innings total, declaring at 503 for 9. Dhruv Jurel was one of the major contributors, remaining unbeaten after reaching his century.
Rain then interrupted the match during the third session on the second day.
With the disciplinary issue now settled, attention returns to the Test itself as India and Sri Lanka continue their battle in Colombo.
