In Kolkata, the principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, Prof. (Dr.) Sandip Ghosh, resigned on Monday following widespread backlash over the rape and murder of a doctor in the hospital. He stated that he was being defamed on social media and that the victim was like a daughter to him. “As a parent, I resign… I don’t want this to happen to anyone in the future,” he was quoted saying by ANI.

Police Investigate Three Junior Doctors

The Kolkata police have summoned three junior doctors and one housekeeping staff member for questioning. They were on duty the night the woman was killed inside the hospital.

The victim, a postgraduate medical student, was found semi-naked inside the hospital’s seminar hall. She had gone there to rest after having a meal with two colleagues.

Post-Mortem Report Details

The initial post-mortem report revealed that the victim was bleeding from her eyes, nose, and private parts. Her neck was broken, and there were injuries on other parts of her body as well.

A man has been arrested in connection with the crime. Although he wasn’t officially linked to the hospital, he was a frequent visitor. The police reported that after allegedly committing the crime, the man went home, slept, and then washed his clothes. However, the police found blood on his shoes.

Protests and Disrupted Services

Hospital services across West Bengal were disrupted on Monday as junior doctors, interns, and postgraduate trainees continued their strike for the fourth consecutive day. They are protesting the rape and murder of the doctor and are demanding a magisterial inquiry into her death.
