Meta’s Mega Plan for India: Underwater Cable to Connect Directly with the USA

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced a massive underwater cable project. This will be the longest undersea cable system in the world, connecting India, the USA, South Africa, Brazil, and other regions. The project is named “Project Waterwarth”, and it will involve laying 50,000 kilometers of cable—longer than the Earth’s circumference!

Supporting AI and Digital Growth

Meta said that this cable system will have 24 fiber pairs, increasing its capacity to support AI projects and improve global connectivity. The project will help boost economic cooperation, digital inclusion, and technology development in different regions.

Regarding India, Meta highlighted that the country has seen major investments and growth in digital infrastructure. Project Waterwarth will further speed up this development and help India achieve its digital economy goals.

7,000 Meters Deep Underwater Cable

The cable will be laid 7,000 meters deep in the ocean. In high-risk areas, special technology will be used to bury the cables and protect them from potential damage caused by ship anchors and other threats.

Internet Traffic Depends on Undersea Cables

  • 95% of the world’s internet traffic is transferred through underwater cables.
  • These cables are crucial for global communication and business.
  • In 2023, some cables in the Baltic Sea were damaged, leading to increased monitoring by NATO.
  • In July 2023, a cable connecting Tonga to the internet was damaged, cutting off access for a large part of the island nation and affecting businesses.

Conclusion

Meta’s Project Waterwarth will significantly boost internet connectivity in India and other countries. This advanced undersea cable system will support AI, improve digital infrastructure, and strengthen the global internet network. 🚀🌏
