The Indian government informed Parliament on Friday that 18 Indian citizens are currently serving in the Russian Armed Forces, out of which 16 have been reported missing by Russian authorities. This information was provided in a written reply by Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirtivardhan Singh, in response to a question in the Lok Sabha.
Details About Indian Citizens in the Russian Army
The government was asked if it had information about the total number of Indians serving in the Russian Armed Forces and their dates of joining.
According to available data:
- 127 Indian citizens were serving in the Russian Armed Forces.
- 97 of them have been discharged from service.
- This outcome was achieved through constant communication between the Indian and Russian governments at high levels.
- The government was also asked for details of Indians still stuck in Russia and measures taken by the Indian Embassy to bring them back.
Current Situation of Indians in the Russian Army
Minister Kirtivardhan Singh stated:
- Currently, 18 Indian citizens are still serving in the Russian Armed Forces.
- Out of these, 16 are reported missing by Russian authorities.
- The Indian government has requested updates from Russian officials about these individuals.
- India has also asked Russia to ensure the safety, well-being, and early release of these Indians.
The government continues to monitor the situation closely and is in contact with Russian authorities to resolve the matter.
