Acclaimed Director Anik Dutta Passes Away

Renowned Bengali filmmaker Anik Dutta passed away in Kolkata on Wednesday at the age of 66. The celebrated director reportedly died at his residence in south Kolkata’s Hindustan Park area, leaving the Bengali film industry and his admirers in shock.

According to reports, he was rushed to a private hospital after the incident, but doctors could not save him. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his demise.

Officials have not yet confirmed whether any foul play was involved. Till late Wednesday night, neither the family nor Kolkata Police had released an official detailed statement regarding the matter.

Family and Last Rites

Anik Dutta is survived by his wife and daughter. Reports suggest that his final rites are expected to take place on Thursday in Kolkata.

The filmmaker had reportedly celebrated his birthday just a few days ago on May 22 and had shared old memories and photographs on social media, making the sudden news of his death even more heartbreaking for fans.

The Director Behind ‘Bhooter Bhabishyat’

Anik Dutta became a household name in Bengali cinema with his 2012 directorial debut Bhooter Bhabishyat. The film gained cult status for its witty storytelling, political satire, and memorable dialogues that continue to be popular among Bengali audiences even today.

The success of the movie later inspired the Hindi remake Gang of Ghosts, directed by Satish Kaushik.

Over the years, Dutta directed several critically appreciated films including Borunbabur Bondhu and Aparajito. His most recent film was Joto Kando Kolkatatei.

Known for Political and Social Commentary

Apart from filmmaking, Anik Dutta was widely known for his outspoken views on political and social issues. The director often expressed Left-leaning opinions and openly criticized political developments in West Bengal.

His film Bhobishyoter Bhoot became controversial after facing backlash over its satirical political content. The movie was reportedly removed from several cinema halls shortly after release, sparking debates about censorship and creative freedom.

Condolences Pour In From Film Industry and Political Leaders

Several prominent personalities from politics and cinema expressed grief over the filmmaker’s death.

Suvendu Adhikari shared condolences on social media and described Dutta’s contribution to Bengali cinema as “priceless.” He also called for a proper investigation into the circumstances surrounding the filmmaker’s sudden death.

Leaders from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), including Mohammad Salim and Satarup Ghosh, visited the hospital after the incident.

Many actors and filmmakers from the Bengali entertainment industry also gathered to pay tribute, including Kaushik Ganguly, Jeetu Kamal, Rudranil Ghosh, and Manasi Sinha.

Actress Debolina Dutta said the filmmaker had been dealing with physical health issues and emotional stress, though nobody expected such a tragic turn.

Deep Influence of Satyajit Ray on His Cinema

A devoted admirer of legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, Anik Dutta often included subtle tributes to Ray’s cinematic style and storytelling in his own films.

Beyond cinema, he also came from a prominent family background. He was the grandson of Narendra Chandra Dutta, founder of the United Bank of India.

With his unique storytelling style, sharp humor, and socially aware filmmaking, Anik Dutta leaves behind a lasting legacy in Bengali cinema.
