China has issued a new order that could create fear among people who support Taiwan’s independence. On March 26, 2025, the Chinese government launched a new reporting channel. Through this, people can inform the government if they know anyone supporting Taiwan’s independence or hindering peace with China.
China’s Accusation Against Taiwan’s Leaders
China claims that Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is oppressing independence supporters. The Taiwan Affairs Office in China has accused some Taiwanese leaders, government officials, and social media influencers of acting like “gangsters” and helping the DPP in its “crimes.”
The new reporting system allows Taiwanese citizens to report any oppression they face. China has promised to keep the identity of informants secret and take legal action against the accused. However, Beijing has not specified what kind of punishment these people will receive.
Taiwan’s Growing Concern
This decision has raised concerns in Taiwan. People fear that China will now pressure independence supporters not just in Taiwan but also in other countries.
In the past, China has already banned major Taiwanese businessmen and leaders, accusing them of “separatist activities.” Beijing considers Taiwan a part of China and has repeatedly said that it will reunite Taiwan by force if necessary. However, Taiwan sees itself as an independent country.
Recently, Taiwan’s President William Lai Ching-te openly criticized China’s policies and called Beijing a “foreign enemy force.”
A Global Strategy to Suppress Dissent?
This new Chinese order could be a challenge for Taiwan’s government. Many Taiwanese people and influencers support democracy and independence. China’s latest move seems to be a way to silence opposition voices in Taiwan and abroad.
It is clear that China’s goal is not just to pressure Taiwan but also to scare people worldwide who support Taiwan’s freedom. Now, the question is: How will Taiwan and other countries respond to this order? Will this conflict escalate further?
