Gen-Z Groups Clash in Nepal Over Interim PM, Army Steps In

Nepal is facing a political storm after weeks of protests led by Gen-Z. Anger over corruption and the social media ban forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign on September 9, 2025. Since then, the fight for the interim Prime Minister’s post has turned into a new battle on the streets.

Youth Clash Outside Army Headquarters

In Kathmandu, young protesters gathered outside the Army Headquarters, demanding their favorite leaders for the top post. Fights broke out as different groups supported different names.

  • On September 9, Balen Shah (Kathmandu Mayor and rapper) became the top choice.
  • On September 10, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki gained strong support.
  • On September 11, Kulman Ghising (known for solving Nepal’s power crisis) emerged as another strong name.

Now, the list also includes Harka Sampang (Mayor of Dharan) and Rabi Lamichhane (journalist-turned-politician, recently freed from jail during protests).

Tug of War Over Interim PM

Nepali media reports say many youths want Balen, Karki, or Sampang as interim PM. But no final decision has been taken yet. Talks are ongoing between Gen-Z leaders, representatives, President Ramchandra Paudel, and the Army Chief.

President Paudel appealed for calm:
“I request everyone to trust that efforts are being made to fulfill the demands of the citizens. Please show patience and help maintain peace and order.”

Army’s Role Raises Questions

According to PTI, the Army confirmed that it is holding several rounds of talks with different stakeholders. The Army wants a leader who can conduct elections within a fixed time frame while keeping law and order under control.

But tensions rose when youths outside Army HQ saw Durga Prasai, a right-wing businessman and political figure, being taken inside for talks. This fueled suspicion that the Army may try to push its own candidate for interim PM.

Situation on Edge

Crowds of Gen-Z supporters are still camping outside Army HQ, waiting for a decision. The clashes between different groups show the deep divide among protesters themselves. Meanwhile, uncertainty continues over who will become Nepal’s next interim Prime Minister.
