Chennai: Director H. Vinoth has put an end to months of speculation surrounding Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan, confirming that the movie is inspired by the Telugu hit Bhagavanth Kesari but has been extensively rewritten to create a fresh cinematic experience.
The clarification comes after persistent rumours suggested that Vijay’s much-anticipated film was a frame-by-frame remake of the 2023 Telugu blockbuster starring Nandamuri Balakrishna.
Only Half the Story Is Inspired by the Original
In a recent interview, H. Vinoth explained that Jana Nayagan borrows only certain elements from Bhagavanth Kesari.
According to the filmmaker, the first half of the movie retains some similarities with the Telugu original, while the second half has been almost completely reimagined with a new screenplay and narrative tailored for Vijay.
Vinoth said the team made several creative changes to ensure the story matched Vijay’s image and connected with Tamil audiences.
Vijay Played a Key Role in the Creative Decision
The director also revealed that he was initially reluctant to direct another adaptation after making Nerkonda Paarvai, the Tamil remake of the Hindi film Pink.
However, Vijay reportedly encouraged him to use Bhagavanth Kesari as a source of inspiration rather than following it exactly.
Vinoth praised the actor’s interest in stories that highlight women’s empowerment, saying that this shared vision ultimately convinced him to take up the project.
Rumours Began Long Before the Official Confirmation
Speculation about the film’s connection to Bhagavanth Kesari first surfaced in early 2025 when actor VTV Ganesh claimed that Vijay admired the Telugu film and wanted its story adapted into Tamil.
The comments quickly went viral, leading many fans to believe the project was an official remake.
Later, Bhagavanth Kesari director Anil Ravipudi responded by saying audiences should wait until the film’s release before deciding whether it was a remake, adding that it was too early to make such conclusions.
Multi-Language Release Planned
Jana Nayagan stars Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, and Bobby Deol in important roles.
The film will release simultaneously in three languages:
- Tamil: Jana Nayagan
- Telugu: Jana Nayakudu
- Hindi: Jan Neta
The pan-India release is scheduled for July 23.
One of Vijay’s Most Anticipated Films
The film has generated enormous excitement among fans as it is widely expected to be Vijay’s final major film before dedicating himself fully to his political career.
With H. Vinoth confirming that the story is only partially inspired by Bhagavanth Kesari, audiences can expect a film that blends familiar themes with a fresh screenplay and a distinctly Vijay-style presentation.
