Tensions are rising between the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over the hosting of the 2025 Champions Trophy. During an ICC Executive Board meeting held in Dubai on Friday, the PCB was given a clear ultimatum: if it does not accept the “hybrid model,” the tournament will proceed without Pakistan as a host.

What is the Hybrid Model?

The hybrid model proposes that Pakistan’s matches be played at home, while India’s matches take place in the UAE. However, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has rejected this proposal. Despite Naqvi’s efforts to explain Pakistan’s stance, no agreement was reached due to India’s security concerns.

India Refuses to Play in Pakistan

The Indian government has made it clear that the Indian team will not tour Pakistan for security reasons. A spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs supported the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), stating that their stance is justified. Most ICC members present at the meeting understood Pakistan’s concerns but agreed that the hybrid model is the only viable solution.

Financial Challenges Without India

An ICC source told PTI, “If India withdraws, the tournament will lose significant value as no broadcasting revenue will be generated.” The PCB has been urged to understand that the tournament’s success largely depends on India’s participation.

If the PCB continues to reject the hybrid model, the tournament could be moved out of Pakistan. The UAE is currently the top alternative host. However, this shift could cost the PCB $6 million in hosting fees and ticket revenue, along with a potential $35 million reduction in annual earnings.

PCB’s Possible Boycott of Women’s T20 World Cup

There are also speculations that the PCB may decide not to participate in the 2025 Women’s T20 World Cup in India as a countermeasure. However, this decision could have significant financial consequences for the PCB.

Final Decision Awaited

All eyes are now on the ICC’s next meeting, scheduled for Saturday, where a final decision is expected. The tournament is set to take place from February 19 to March 9, 2025, and due to packed international schedules, there is no room for date changes.
