The Supreme Court has taken a firm stance on the cutting of 454 trees at the Dalmia Farmhouse in Mathura. On Friday (November 29, 2024), the court issued contempt notices to officials of the Uttar Pradesh government and representatives of the Dalmia Farmhouse.

Court Seeks Response by December 16

The Supreme Court has asked the officials and Dalmia Farmhouse representatives to respond to the notice by December 16. Additionally, the court has ordered a halt to any further construction at the farmhouse. The incident, where 454 trees were cut on the night of September 18, came to light through media reports.

Action Taken After Media Reports

Following media coverage, FIRs were filed by the Forest Department, Nagar Nigam, and the Electricity Department. The police acted swiftly, arresting 31 individuals, who were later released on bail about a month after their arrest.

Monitoring Responsibility Assigned to Police Officers

The Supreme Court has ruled that even if permission is granted for cutting trees, no trees can be cut between 6 PM and 8 AM. Local police station heads will be responsible for ensuring this rule is followed.

Status Quo at the Farmhouse

The court has ordered that the current status of the farmhouse in Vrindavan’s Chhattikara area must be maintained. It has also directed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Mathura to issue notices to all the accused.

Central Empowered Committee to Investigate

The court has instructed the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) to examine the Dalmia Farmhouse case. This investigation will help determine if stricter fines should be imposed on those who illegally cut the trees. The court also suggested that the state government consider increasing penalties for such violations.
