Washington: A new controversy has emerged in the U.S. presidential election, involving Iran. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is now investigating claims that sensitive documents from Donald Trump’s presidential campaign were stolen through cyber hacking. There were also attempts to breach the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump’s campaign team recently claimed that their campaign was hacked by Iran. The FBI released a brief statement confirming the investigation.
No Evidence Provided
Trump’s campaign team did not provide specific evidence of Iran’s involvement, but the claim came shortly after Microsoft released a report detailing foreign agents’ attempts to interfere in the 2024 U.S. election. The report mentioned an incident in June where an Iranian military intelligence unit allegedly hacked the email account of a former senior advisor and sent a virus-laden email to a high-ranking official in the presidential campaign. According to two people familiar with the matter, the suspected Iranian cyber breach also targeted Biden and Harris’s campaigns, and the FBI is investigating this.
What Did Iran Say?
When asked about Trump’s campaign’s claims, Iran’s mission to the United Nations denied any involvement. The mission stated, “We do not trust such reports.” They further clarified, “The Iranian government has no intention or motive to interfere in the U.S. presidential election and does not engage in such activities.”
