In 2023, more than 65 lakh students failed to pass their 10th and 12th board exams. The Ministry of Education released a report showing that a large number of students could not clear these exams. The report includes results from state boards, school boards, and national boards, and highlights that the MP Board had the worst results.
Which Boards Were Analyzed?
The analysis covered results from 59 school boards, 56 state boards, and 3 national boards. It revealed that over 65 lakh students did not pass their board exams last year.
The report also found that more girls from government schools participated in the 12th-grade exams than boys.
What the Report Says
According to the report, about 33.5 lakh students in class 10th did not move to the next grade, and 5.5 lakh students did not appear for the exams at all. Out of those who appeared, 28 lakh students failed. This contributed to a lower gross enrollment ratio at the higher secondary level.
Similarly, about 32.4 lakh students did not complete their 12th-grade exams. Of these, 5.2 lakh did not take the exam, and 27.2 lakh students failed.
State Boards Had More Failures
The report clearly shows that more students from state boards failed compared to those from national boards. The failure rate for students in national boards was 6%, while for state boards, it was 16%. This number is much higher for state boards compared to national boards.
For 10th grade, 12% of students from national boards failed, while 18% of students from state boards failed. This pattern was similar for both classes, with state boards having a higher failure rate.
Performance by State
When looking at state boards, the highest number of 10th-grade failures were from the MP Board, followed by Bihar Board and UP Board. For 12th grade, the most failures were in the UP Board, followed by the MP Board. The overall student performance in 2023 was lower than in the previous year, 2022.
