Pakistani blogger Asma Batool was jailed for writing a poem on social media about women’s oppression after the Kolkata rape case. She shared a poem by Salman Haider, stating, “Khuda, Bhagwan, or Ishwar, all were present when the rape happened.” She posted this on Facebook and Instagram, sparking anger among some religious leaders who accused her of blasphemy. As a result, a case was filed against her, and she was arrested by the police.

Attack on Her Home and Death Threats

Following the incident, a mob attacked her home, and videos of the attack circulated on social media, showing some religious leaders involved. Asma’s family reported to the police that they were threatened with death and that some people even tried to set their house on fire. While some people support Asma and demand her release, the situation has sparked a significant debate in Pakistan.

Social Media Backlash

Asma Batool has a large following on social media, where she has been vocal about attacks on minorities in Pakistan. Many are protesting her arrest online. One user on X (formerly Twitter) expressed confusion about how the poem could be considered blasphemous, calling the situation hateful. Human rights activist Gulalai also condemned Asma’s arrest, stating that the blasphemy law is being used like a sedition law to punish dissenters. The case has become a major issue in Pakistan.
