Search operation still continues in Kerala

The search operation in the landslide-affected areas of Wayanad district in northern Kerala continued for the 10th day on Thursday and today a large number of cadaver dogs were deployed to search for remains buried under the debris at the disaster sites. Air Force helicopters are being used to land special search teams in inaccessible areas along the Chaliyar river and more rescue teams, heavy machinery and K9 dog squads are being deployed in six different areas of disaster-affected Choorlamala and Mundakkai.

Landslide in Kerala causes massive destruction

Landslides and torrential rains in Wayanad, Kerala devastated many villages. The massive landslide caused by the rains engulfed Mundakkai, Choorlammala, Attamala and Noolpuzha villages. At the time when the landslide occurred, most of the people were sleeping in their homes. Landslides have caused massive destruction in Wayanad district of Kerala. Kerala is one of the six states in the country which are important and sensitive from the environmental point of view. In such a situation, such devastation took place here, which destroyed the homes of many people.

Rehabilitation will be done in this way

Along with the search operation, the state government is also working for the temporary rehabilitation of the people affected by the landslide. A cabinet sub-committee in Wayanad said on Wednesday that rehabilitation will be done in three phases. In the first phase, the victims and others will be immediately but temporarily resettled in vacant houses, quarters, flats and hostels within the panchayat limits of the affected areas or nearby panchayats.

In addition, rental houses or flats will be found and provided at government expense, the committee had said. Buildings and establishments under the government will also be used for this purpose. The second phase will involve implementing a temporary ‘transit house’ system before people are shifted to their permanent homes. According to the committee, suitable locations will be found for this and houses will be built using adaptive technology.

It said the township project with all facilities under complete rehabilitation will be implemented in the third phase. The committee also said that apart from search and rescue operations and phased rehabilitation, the government is also working to restore the identity and other documents and certificates of the people who lost everything in the landslide.
