U.S. President Donald Trump has once again threatened to impose reciprocal tariffs on foreign goods. This time, he directly mentioned India and said that he will definitely impose tariffs, with an official announcement expected soon. If this happens, India’s exports and economy could suffer losses.

Trump’s Tariff Warning

About 10 days ago, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the U.S., and many believed he would try to convince Trump to ease tariff policies. However, things did not go as expected. Instead of reducing the trade tensions, Trump has now specifically targeted India, taking an oath to impose reciprocal tariffs soon.

Trump made it clear that countries like India and China will face the same tariffs that they impose on American goods. He has previously called India the “Tariff King” and has criticized India’s import duties on global platforms. He has also mentioned tariffs in his election campaigns, showing that he is serious about implementing them.

Trump’s Announcement on Reciprocal Tariffs

On Friday, Trump stated that the U.S. will impose tariffs equal to what other countries charge on American products. He emphasized that there will be no exceptions and that the tariffs will be imposed fairly.

“If India and China impose high tariffs on our goods, we will do the same to them. America has never done this before, but now we will. I wanted to do this before COVID-19, and now it’s time,” Trump said.

Trump’s Criticism of India’s Tariff Policy

Even before meeting PM Modi, Trump had criticized India’s high tariff rates several times. He believes that doing business in India is difficult because of these high tariffs.

Recently, he referred to a meeting between Modi and Elon Musk, stating that Musk wants to expand business in India, but high tariffs are a major hurdle. This, according to Trump, makes it very challenging for foreign companies to operate in India.

Harley-Davidson Example

Trump brought up the example of Harley-Davidson, an American motorcycle company. He claimed that due to India’s high import duties, Harley-Davidson could not sell bikes in India. As a result, the company was forced to set up a manufacturing unit in India instead of importing bikes from the U.S.

Trump further alleged that India forces American companies to manufacture locally by imposing high tariffs on imports. He also mentioned that some smaller countries have even higher tariff rates than India.

Possible Impact on India

If Trump imposes reciprocal tariffs on India, it could lead to huge losses for India’s export industries. According to a report, India’s exporting sectors could lose around $7 billion (₹61,000 crore) annually.

Industries most affected might include:

  • Chemical and metal products
  • Jewelry
  • Automobiles
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Food products

Impact on Indian Economy

A report by Standard Chartered Bank estimates that if the U.S. imposes a 10% tariff on all Indian imports, India’s GDP could decline by 50 to 60 basis points. Additionally, India’s exports to the U.S. could drop by 11-12%.

This move could significantly impact trade relations between the two countries and slow down India’s economic growth.
