After Australia and Italy, the United States is also considering banning the Chinese AI chatbot, DeepSeek. Media reports suggest that several U.S. senators are working on a law to prohibit its use on government devices. If someone is caught using DeepSeek, they may face a hefty fine or even imprisonment.

Heavy Penalties Proposed

If the law is passed, anyone found using DeepSeek could be fined up to $800,000 (around ₹6.5 crores) and face up to 20 years in prison. The ban might extend beyond government devices to other platforms as well. Companies caught using it could be fined over $7 million (more than ₹60 crores).

Why the Ban is Being Considered

Serious allegations have been made against DeepSeek. Reports claim the app sends user data to China. It is said that its coding is designed to transfer sensitive user information to a company controlled by the Chinese government. This has raised concerns in the U.S., leading to preparations for the ban.

Countries That Have Already Banned DeepSeek

  • Australia: Recently ordered the removal of DeepSeek AI from all government systems due to security risks.
  • Italy: Blocked the app due to concerns over data protection standards.
  • India: The Finance Ministry has issued orders banning AI tools like ChatGPT and DeepSeek on government devices.
