Meta-owned messaging app WhatsApp is preparing to launch a fantastic new feature for its users in India. This new feature is currently being tested and will allow users to make various bill payments directly through the app. Let’s understand what this update offers.
What Can You Do with the New Feature?
According to media reports, once this feature is available, users will be able to:
- Pay electricity and water bills
- Recharge their mobile phones
- Pay house rent
This feature will be integrated into the existing UPI-based payment system, WhatsApp Pay. Currently, WhatsApp Pay only allows users to send money to contacts and make payments to businesses via UPI.
WhatsApp Pay Got Approval Recently
WhatsApp Pay recently received approval from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to offer UPI services to all its users. Earlier, it was restricted to only 10 crore users. Although the limit has now been lifted, WhatsApp Pay still has around 5.1 crore users, which is only about 10% of its total user base.
Tough Competition for WhatsApp Pay
The digital payment market in India is highly competitive. PhonePe leads the market with a 48% share, followed by Google Pay at 37%. WhatsApp Pay will face a tough challenge in gaining more users in this competitive space.
