The BJP seems to have lowered its expectations for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly Election in 2024. Despite being in power with the Mahayuti alliance, the party has set a target of winning only 100 seats, even though it currently holds 106 seats in the 288-member assembly. The party plans to achieve the majority of 145 seats by combining efforts with its alliance partners, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP.
Why Did BJP Set a 100-Seat Target?
According to a report by The Indian Express, Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis explained to BJP leaders and workers that the primary goal in the upcoming assembly election is to secure at least 100 seats. If BJP can achieve this, no government can be formed without their support.
Mahayuti’s Success Depends on This Plan
BJP leaders believe that although the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) won more seats in the recent Lok Sabha elections, the vote share difference was only 0.3%, with around 200,000 votes separating the two sides. They think this gap can be overcome. Fadnavis also highlighted the importance of connecting with people on a personal level, rather than relying solely on large campaigns.
The success of this strategy will determine the outcome for the Mahayuti alliance in the upcoming election.
