The situation in Bangladesh is worsening after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. The interim Prime Minister, Muhammad Yunus, has been seeking loans from the World Bank, IMF, and the Asian Development Bank to deal with the country’s financial crisis. Now, a new threat has emerged. The Adani Group has started pressuring Bangladesh to pay for the electricity supply. They are demanding nearly $500 million (50 crore dollars) in payment.
Muhammad Yunus Questions Old Deals by the Previous Government
Adani Group supplies electricity to Bangladesh from its 1600 MW Godda Plant, which was set up during Sheikh Hasina’s government. However, Muhammad Yunus, the interim Prime Minister, has called this deal very expensive and non-transparent. He has questioned many infrastructure deals made by the previous government. According to a report by the Financial Times, Yunus’ government is delaying the payment of this $500 million, which has angered the Adani Group. As a result, Adani Group has issued a warning to the interim government.

Bangladesh Owes Adani Group $800 Million in Total
The biggest problem facing the interim government is Bangladesh’s debt. According to the Adani Group, they have been in talks with the interim government and have informed them about the situation. While Adani Group remains committed to supplying electricity to Bangladesh, the delayed payments are causing concern. Both sides have responsibilities, and if they are not fulfilled, it could lead to bigger problems. The report claims that Bangladesh’s total unpaid electricity bill has reached $3.7 billion. Out of this, $492 million is owed to the Adani Group alone. In total, Bangladesh owes about $800 million to the Adani Group for various services.
