DeepSeek AI Under India’s Watch: Concerns About Data Security and Privacy

What is DeepSeek AI?
DeepSeek is a low-cost AI platform that has recently gained attention in the tech world. However, it is now facing criticism for data security issues and its connection to China. The Indian government is closely monitoring the platform due to potential risks to national security and user privacy.

Why is India Concerned About DeepSeek AI?

DeepSeek’s privacy policy reveals that it stores users’ personal data, including uploaded files, on servers located in China. This goes against India’s policy of keeping sensitive data within the country.

In the past, India has taken strict action against Chinese apps and companies. Platforms like TikTok and PUBG were banned due to security concerns. Telecom companies like Huawei and ZTE were also excluded from key projects. Experts believe DeepSeek could face similar action if it poses a threat to national security.

Errors in DeepSeek’s AI Model

Since its launch, DeepSeek’s AI model has faced criticism for providing inaccurate or misleading information about Indian states. This is similar to issues seen in Google’s AI platform Gemini. These errors raise concerns about the reliability of AI-generated information.

AI Regulations and Challenges for DeepSeek

India is still working on regulating AI platforms. The Delhi High Court is reviewing a case to determine the extent of control Indian courts can have over global AI companies. Additionally, DeepSeek’s data policy does not align with the upcoming Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025, aimed at strengthening data security laws.

Cyber Attacks and Government Monitoring

Recently, DeepSeek faced a cyber attack, after which it restricted access for users outside China. Despite this, the platform remains popular due to its low-cost AI services. Experts suggest that India should enforce strict data localization rules to protect user data and national interests.

Future of DeepSeek in India

“If DeepSeek continues providing services in India, data security and privacy concerns may arise,” said Lalu John Philip, founder of Boolean Legal. The government’s decision on DeepSeek could set a precedent for regulating cross-border AI platforms.

Given India’s focus on AI and cybersecurity, the future of DeepSeek in the country remains uncertain. If deemed a threat to national security, it might face a ban similar to other Chinese apps.
