The Maharashtra government made an important decision on Tuesday (January 28, 2025). The cabinet announced that there will be no increase in toll rates for the Atal Setu, India’s longest sea bridge, for the next year. This bridge connects South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai.
Fixed Toll Rate for One More Year
According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the toll rate for the bridge will remain ₹250 for cars and SUVs until December 31, 2025. The decision to maintain this rate came after a review during the cabinet meeting.
Inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi
The Atal Setu, which is 21.8 kilometers long, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 12, 2024. Out of the total length, 16.5 kilometers stretch over the sea and 5.5 kilometers are on land. The bridge has six lanes and plays a key role in boosting connectivity in Maharashtra.
Built at a Cost of ₹21,200 Crore
The bridge starts from Sewri in South Mumbai, crosses Thane Creek near Elephanta Island, and ends at Chirle village near Nhava Sheva. The total construction cost was ₹21,200 crore, with ₹15,000 crore taken as loans.
Improved Travel and Reduced Costs
The Atal Setu has made travel between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai easier and more affordable. Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) recently reduced bus fares by over 50%.
Since its opening, the bridge has significantly reduced travel time and improved connectivity in the region. From January to August last year, around 5 million vehicles, including buses, private cars, and commercial vehicles, used the bridge. It has become a vital connection between South Mumbai and the rapidly developing Navi Mumbai International Airport.
