Mpox Virus: A few years ago, the monkeypox virus was confined to just one part of a single country. However, in 2022, it started spreading to other countries. This time, the virus has not only spread across South Africa and Europe but has also reached Pakistan. Given the rapid spread of the virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a global alert. Naturally, people are worried and want to know if the monkeypox virus could be as dangerous and fast-spreading as the coronavirus. NDTV spoke with Dr. Charudatt Arora to get more insights on this virus.

Important Details About the Monkeypox Virus

Pregnant Women and Children Should Be Careful
Dr. Charudatt Arora explained that the monkeypox virus targets people with weaker immune systems, including pregnant women and children. He mentioned that children, who often spend time close together at school or other places, are more at risk. Their habit of sharing things also makes it easier for infections to spread quickly among them.

Is Monkeypox as Dangerous as Coronavirus?
Many people are concerned that the monkeypox virus might be as dangerous as the coronavirus. According to Dr. Arora, the monkeypox virus is not as dangerous as the coronavirus. It doesn’t spread as quickly or cause as severe illness. However, this doesn’t mean that we should take the virus lightly. It’s important to take emergency measures and be aware of its risks.

Dr. Arora advises not to share even the smallest items, like spoons or bedsheets, with someone who is infected. He also recommends wearing a mask when near an infected person and asking them to do the same. Avoid skin-to-skin contact as well.

Include Fruits, Vegetables, Pulses, and Grains in Your Diet

How Effective is the Vaccine?
Unlike the coronavirus, there is no specific vaccine for the monkeypox virus. Dr. Arora mentioned that people who received the smallpox vaccine during childhood are somewhat protected against this virus. However, most people in the younger generation haven’t received this vaccine, so it’s important for everyone to be cautious and protect themselves from the monkeypox virus.
