PM Modi in Ukraine: On Friday, August 23, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, for a one-day trip. Just six weeks ago, PM Modi had met Russian President Vladimir Putin. Now, he is meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The war between Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing for two and a half years, causing significant damage. PM Modi’s visit is seen as a move to initiate peace efforts.

During this visit, PM Modi is expected to discuss opportunities for cooperation in defense, economy, business, and science and technology with President Zelenskyy. After Ukraine gained independence in 1991, Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit this Eastern European country. This visit has garnered significant attention in Western media due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Before leaving for Ukraine, PM Modi expressed hope for peace in the region.

India’s Balanced Relations with Both Russia and Ukraine

Despite its traditionally friendly ties with Russia, India has maintained a neutral stance on the Ukraine war. Even during the conflict, India has managed to keep cordial relations with both Russia and Ukraine. This balanced approach is why President Zelenskyy’s invitation to PM Modi to visit Ukraine reflects India’s growing importance on the global stage. Zelenskyy’s aim in meeting with Modi is to gain support and assistance in dealing with the war.

Key Conversations Between Zelenskyy and PM Modi Regarding the War

In December 2022, amidst the war, President Zelenskyy sought to talk to PM Modi. He requested India’s help in his proposed “Peace Formula.” At the time, India was engaged in extensive trade with Russia, even as Western countries imposed sanctions on Moscow. India was one of the largest buyers of Russian oil, which indirectly provided financial support to Putin’s war efforts.

Zelenskyy took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to request India’s participation in implementing the peace plan. He also appreciated India’s humanitarian aid and support at the United Nations.

In March 2024, PM Modi and President Zelenskyy focused on strengthening India-Ukraine partnerships in various fields during their conversation. During their talks about the Russia-Ukraine conflict, PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to a people-centered approach and emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as a way to end the war. He assured that India is fully prepared to assist in achieving peace.

President Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for the humanitarian aid provided by India to Ukraine. The two leaders also met during the G7 Summit in June this year, where India once again advocated for peace in Ukraine.
