Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Mongolia on Monday night. This visit has gained a lot of attention because the International Criminal Court (ICC) had ordered Mongolia to arrest Putin, but instead, he was given a guard of honor. During the visit, Putin also made a move that upset China. He announced that Russia would supply weapons and provide military training to Mongolia. This announcement worried China, as it has a border dispute with Mongolia, similar to its disputes with India. There have been clashes between China and Mongolia over this issue.

After Putin’s announcement, Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister, Alexander, confirmed that Russia will supply military equipment and weapons to Mongolia. Russia will also assist with repairs and other exchanges. He added that 340 Mongolian soldiers have already received training from Russia.

Russia to Supply Gas and Electricity to Mongolia
During the visit, Putin had discussions with Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh on various topics. Putin mentioned that the relationship between Russia and Mongolia is growing stronger. He also said that both countries are cooperating in anti-terrorism operations. Putin offered help to Mongolia in the gas sector and said that Russia already supplies large amounts of gas and electricity to Mongolia.

International Criminal Court Had Ordered Putin’s Arrest
Last year, the ICC ordered the arrest of President Putin, accusing him of war crimes. The court held Putin responsible for illegally transferring children from Ukraine to Russia, a crime that started after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Mongolia is a member of the ICC, but despite the arrest order, it honored Putin during his visit.
